December photography has one trap: tree lights look magical to your eye and murky to a camera. Here is what gets the cleanest page.

• Turn the room lights on. Tree lights alone are too dim for clean edges. Window light during the day is even better.
• Hat at a three-quarter angle. A santa hat photographed slightly off-center keeps both the hat silhouette and the face detail.
• Get close. The tree can be in the frame, but your pet should be the subject, not a dot beneath it.
• Skip the twinkle filter. Bokeh and glow effects erase the edges we trace. Clean phone photo wins.
• Shoot the nine-second window. If the hat lasts nine seconds, take five photos in those nine seconds. One will be the page.
